When you become a Foster Carer, you provide a safe and supportive environment for a child or young person who is unable to live at home. If you’ve been thinking about becoming a Carer but aren’t sure if you have the skills or ability, keep reading to find out who makes an ideal Foster Carer.

Myth #1 - "I'm not Aboriginal, so I can't foster an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander child."

VACCA welcomes Carers of any cultural or racial background. Providing a culturally safe, stable and loving home environment is what matters most.

At the heart of providing care for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander child or young person is ensuring their cultural, social and emotional wellbeing – this is something almost anyone can do.

Myth #2 - “I can’t foster because I’m single, I can’t foster because I’m too old, I can’t foster because...”

Our Carers come from all walks of life. We welcome people of all ages, Cultures, backgrounds and identities to explore becoming a Foster Carer – our diversity is our strength!

If you’re over 21 and can provide a culturally safe, stable and loving home to an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander child or young person, you may be an ideal candidate.

Myth #3 - “I’ve never been a parent; I won’t be allowed to foster”

While experience caring for children can be helpful, it’s not a requirement to become a Foster Carer. What’s most important is being able to provide a culturally safe, stable and loving home.

When you start your Foster Care journey with VACCA, you’re never alone. We’ll be beside you every step of the way, providing training and ongoing support throughout your journey, plus lots of opportunities to connect with other Carers.
