Your history, your rights

VACCA supports the right of former clients to access their records and any information that relates to themselves as an important part of understanding their story. VACCA recognises that having this information can be critical to a client’s wellbeing and healing.  
The information contained within VACCA’s files on its staff, its clients and its carers is subject to both privacy laws and confidentiality laws. VACCA has an Access to Records Policy and Procedure that is in line with state and federal legislative requirements. Any assistance and information provided by VACCA is confidential. 

We can provide support for former clients which includes;

  • Support in applying for, receiving and reviewing records, and after if required. An independent person from VACCA can also be arranged if requested. 
  • Referrals to other support agencies for counselling, 
  • Support regarding allegation of complains

How to access files:
If you wish to obtain your personal information from VACCA you need to contact the CEO in writing to request this. Most importantly we need to know your;

  • Name at birth
  • Date of birth (if known)
  • Address and phone number

To process your request, we will require some identification from you. Please also include a copy of your;

  • Birth Certificate or Drivers Licence
  • Death Certificate (if you are applying as next of kin for a relative’s records)

The CEO can be contacted via email: vacca@vacca.org or by post: PO Box 494, Northcote Plaza Vic 3070. VACCA does not charge a fee to individuals who request access to their personal information, and all requests will be processed in a timely manner. 

A VACCA worker will contact you prior to processing your request to discuss the information you are looking for, provide information about what information we can and cannot release due to privacy considerations, and what support services are available to you during this process and after. We will provide you with an understanding of the expected timelines.
