Koorie Kids Stay at School

Home > Our Services > Education and Early Years > Koorie Kids Stay at School

Our Koorie Kids Stay at School program supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people who are at risk of disengaging or have disengaged completely from  education. Our trauma informed approach helps the young person, their family and the school to find solutions to improve learning outcomes.

Who is it for?

  • Aged 10 to 16 years (with priority given to young people transitioning from Years 6 to 7, and 10 to 11 VCAL, VCE or TAFE).
  • Has a history of school disengagement and is in need of academic support.
  • Lives and attends school in the north west metropolitan region of Melbourne.

How it works

  • Our Education Support Worker (a qualified teacher) will work directly with the young person for at least six months, supporting them with their learning - whether in school or at home.
  • Some of the ways we can help include:
    • making sure the child feels welcomed, supported and culturally safe at school
    • providing tutoring support for one hour per week at school
    • developing and implementing an individual learning plan
    • assisting with school essentials like uniforms and books
    • supporting family and young person with routines
    • connecting the young person and families to other services if needed - healthcare, counselling, cultural programs or holiday activities
    • supporting the young person and family at school meetings (for example student support group meetings and parent-teacher interviews)
    • encouraging passions and skills through extracurricular activities
    • providing opportunities for the young person to engage in cultural activities.
