Koorie Kids Getting Ready For School
The Deadly Reading Literacy Bags were created to:
- Support and encourage carers and parents to connect with their children through play, story telling and music
- To celebrate that parents and carers are the children’s first teachers
- Enhance the early literacy experiences of Aboriginal children by providing culturally appropriate resources.
The Literacy Bags include a range of resources to support the language development of Aboriginal children from 0-6 years of age. Age appropriate books, a music CD and clap sticks, magnetic letters and storytelling prompts are included to inspire and encourage language development at home.
Parents and carers receive a literacy bag when they participate in a workshop which aims to give the adults an understanding and confidence of the role they play in the language development of the children in their care.
The workshop, facilitated by the VACCA Cultural Programs Team, demonstrates a fun and interactive way of engaging children in positive experiences through art, music, play and storytelling.
