The Koorie Youth Traineeship (KYT) program is the result of a successful partnership between MacKillop Family Services (MacKillop) and Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA) since 2013 which aims to deliver employment opportunities and beneficial career pathways for Indigenous Australians aged 17-25 within Victoria.
Both organisations have a strong commitment to help improve employment outcomes for Aboriginal people.
About the Organisations
MacKillop Family Services, a Catholic community agency, exists to support, foster hope and promote justice for children, young people and families, particularly those who have experienced distress, disadvantage and abuse. MacKillop works across New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia
MacKillop Family Services is an accredited provider of The Sanctuary Model. Sanctuary supports organisations to provide a safe and caring environment for people affected by trauma, and to maintain a culture that reflects these qualities at every level within the organisation.
VACCA is a statewide Aboriginal community controlled organisation advocating for the rights of Aboriginal children, young people and families, and providing them with services, self-determination, cultural respect and safety. VACCA is the lead Aboriginal child and family welfare organisation in Victoria, providing programs and services to reinforce Aboriginal culture and encourage best parenting practices, as well as advising government in relation to child abuse and neglect in the Aboriginal community. VACCA aims to increase its Aboriginal workforce and develop valuable career pathways for its staff, in particular Aboriginal staff.
About the Program
The Traineeship Program has been developed to provide Aboriginal youth an opportunity to gain practical workplace skills and a relevant qualification. The program gives Aboriginal youth the chance to participate in a unique learning opportunity. The trainees will complete a Certificate III or above in Business. The delivery of this certificate will be conducted by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) SportsReady Education & Employment. KYT is led by an Indigenous coordinator.
During the Traineeship Program the trainees will be rotated between VACCA and MacKillop ensuring they are given an opportunity to experience working both in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and a mainstream human services organisation.
The traineeship positions will be supported by the Aboriginal Traineeship Coordinator, Host Managers and a Steering Committee.
